Australia to give $15 million for Tarawa road

Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr has announced Australia will provide $15 million to rehabilitate 40 kilometres of main road in South Tarawa, Kiribati, which has been undermined by rising sea levels and coastal erosion.

Speaking from Kiribati, Senator Carr said the works were essential if the nation was to survive the impact of climate change.

Families seeking closure from coastwatcher deaths in Kiribati

Attempts to identify bodies thought to possibly be New Zealand coastwatchers beheaded on Tarawa by the Japanese in World War Two may achieve a result by early next year.



The men volunteered during World War II to be coast-watchers, a chain of radio operators stationed on Pacific islands to look out for enemy fleet movements.

Air Kiribati prepares for the worst following suspended flights between Tarawa and Nadi

A spokesperson for Air Kiribati says the airline is not confident that the sudden suspension of its flights between Fiji and Kiribati will be lifted any time soon.

Last week, the Fiji government cancelled Air Kiribati flights between Nadi and Tarawa without explanation, incurring the airline a loss of almost 100,000 US dollars so far.

Kiribati’s poor roads to be improved with help from international agencies

Millions of dollars is to be spent to improve the safety and sustainability of key roads on Kiribati’s main island.



The Asian Development Bank along with the World Bank and the Pacific Regional Infrastructure Facility is providing the funding for the improvements.



They will see 27 point five kilometres of main road and 6 kilometres of feeder roads on South Tarawa rehabilitated, with the ADB providing 12 million US dollars…

Nauru and Kiribati do airline deal for Fiji service
