Plans for 'waiting sheds' announced - Rabi Island

PASSENGERS of inter-island ferries will no longer have to spend hours waiting for their boats in discomfort.

According to the Information Ministry, the construction of waiting sheds at jetties is expected to begin in the North next year.

The design of waiting sheds have been prepared for jetties in Savusavu, Vanuabalavu and Rabi.

Purpose built boat to facilitate business in the islands

China is helping build a special fishing vessel to help islanders move their catches efficiently to their main markets for sales, exports or further processing. The $4 million vessel, which is 36.8 metre long and eight meters wide, has a storage capacity of 50 tonnes of cargo with nine passengers on board.

Sewing machine donations keep coming for Fiji

Fiji's interim government plans to supply every village in the country with two sewing machines.



They are on track with a recent donation of 500 electric machines from China.



Most of the 1,170 villages in Fiji have either a hand or treadle machine courtesy of donations from All China Women's Federation, the Indian government and the Latter Day saints.

Nauru’s street lighting goes solar

The Micronesian island nation of Nauru has hooked almost the entire complement of street lighting around its main urban area on to solar power.

Thanks to an assistance programme funded and technically managed by the government of the republic of China (Taiwan), which has a diplomatic mission on the island, some 155 new solar lights now light up Nauru’s streets.

Banaban Women raise funds for village projects
