Assistance for 50 Rabi Island students

FIJI TIMES ONLINE Saturday, February 05, 2011

THE 50 underprivileged students identified for assistance on Rabi Island have been provided with a complete set of school gear.

These included 23 students at Banaban Primary School, 16 at Tabiang Primary School and 11 at Bokonikai Primary School, according to Terikano Takesau of the Banaban Child Welfare.

"The material includes stationery, uniforms, school bags, sandals and sanitary items," Ms Takesau said.

"These are all the basic materials that some children aren't able to afford.

"We met with the students, teachers and the school management committee who were overwhelmed with the assistance.

"We asked the children to make use of the donation properly and that there will be no reason for them to miss school and fail exams because they have been provided with the essential materials."

This is part of an anonymous gift worth $10,000 to the Lions Club of Labasa, and it targets about 50 underprivileged students between six and 14 years of age.

Project coordinator Rosan Lal, said the assistance was provided to children who originated from broken families, single parents, disabled parents and orphans that have been victims of child abuse and neglect.
