THE Banaban people of Rabi Island in Vanua Levu will host a three-day carnival his week to honour the lives of their loved ones who have passed on.
The annual event, aimed at strengthening ties among the people, will feature the sale of handicraft items and food and the performance of traditional dances by Banaban children.
Banaban Women's Organisation president Terikano Takesau said the carnival was a much-awaited event for the people of Rabi because it brought the islanders together.
"This is an annual event a lot of people look forward to because they get to socialise and hangout with their relatives from other villages," Ms Takesau said.
"This island is full of diverse culture and most of our children who reside in other parts of the country and abroad will get a chance to learn our culture if they attend this carnival.
"Our children will be putting up traditional dances as this is one way of teaching them to preserve their cultural identity."
Ms Takesau said the women of Rabi would also display the production of virgin coconut oil and soap-making because it has been the major source of income for most families on the island.
