DISMAC officials now in Rabi and they expect assessments to be completed by tomorrow

Fiji: TROPICAL CYCLONE TOMAS: Red Cross Northern Division Operations Strengthened

Source: Fiji Red Cross Society Date: 18 Mar 2010
Red Cross has today relocated all our Northern Divisions Relief Operations to Labasa to strengthen our response and relief efforts for communities and areas affected in the Division.

Centralised in Labasa, and in close collaboration with our Emergency Response Teams, DISMAC Assessment teams and the Commissioner Northern, the team will be mobilising relief stock as per the field assessment reports which are currently being conducted by our Emergency Response Teams. With 5 Disaster Containers already pre-positioned in the North, reinforcement stock is currently being transported to Labasa.

With assistance from the RNZAF, we were able to load onto the Hercules aircraft our 3 ton truck, loaded with the reinforcement stock, and accompanied by our Disaster Coordinator Vuli Gauna bound for Labasa. The truck will be used to help transport people currently sheltering at Evacuation centres back to their homes as well as the carting of stock around Vanua Levu and to Savusavu wharf for our Taveuni Branch.

Communications with our teams that departed on the Naval ship bound for Northern Lau, Lomaiviti and Cikobia have been maintained through our Emergency satellite phones. The teams have each reached their destinations and have began their field assessments.

Our assessment teams that were mobilised with the DISMAC officials to Rabi and Kioa have just completed their assessments on Kioa and are now in Rabi and they expect assessments to be completed by tomorrow.

Director General Mrs. Alison Cupit says "to better serve the affected people of this dire disaster, it was logical to move the central control of operations to the Northern Division".
