A Coast Guard helicopter evacuated a man from a tanker this afternoon after a shipboard explosion. The 614-foot, German-flagged tanker tanker was about 30 miles northwest of Tampa Bay when the explosion happened about 3:15 p.m., the Coast Guard reported. Ship officials said the 56-year-old crew member from the Pacific Ocean island of Kiribati was injured when a hydraulic line exploded while the ship's anchor was being raised. The Coast Guard sent a crew from Clearwater in a Jayhawk helicopter; the man was hoisted from the ship at about 5 p.m. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. His name has not been released because his family has not been notified. The tanker was anchored off Tampa Bay waiting for clearance to dock with a cargo of anhydrous ammonia. Coast Guard officials say they are investigating the cause of the accident.
