Government has provided $30,000 to meet election costs for Rabi Island. The Banaban Community goes to the polls this week to elect their council of Leaders. There are altogether a total of 2,971 registered voters from the four main villages - that is Tabwewa, Uma, Tabiang and Buakonikai - as well as those Banabans living in Vanua Levu and Viti Levu.

A total of 28 candidates have been confirmed and they will be vying for the nine member seats of the Council. An election for the nine members of the Rabi Council of Leaders is now scheduled for this Thursday. The councilors are elected on 4 year terms.

Just a bit of correction needed: This week election will be for the eight councilors only and the week after will be week for election of Chairman. The ninth council member will be the person with third highest vote from the village where Chairman is from.
