15 students in Fiji will benefit from a US$57,393 scholarship grant given by the Taiwan and Chinese government for the Pacific Islands Forum Scholarships. Fiji has the largest number of students to receive this assistance. Students from other Pacific Island nations are also included - two from the Federated States Of Micronesia, One from Kiribati, one form Niue, two from Papua New Guinea, One from Samoa, two from the Solomon Islands, four from Tuvalu and one from Vanuatu.
The scholarship recipients are based at local and regional universities and colleges; and are pursuing studies in commerce, medicine, carpentry, engineering, marine science/affairs, information systems and agriculture.
A total of $US 406,000 was also given for projects under the Regional Development Assistance. The projects will cover areas in ICT; regional water, sanitation and hygiene; renewable energy in Smaller Island States; solar photovoltaic assessments; fisheries management, education; and youth training.
