First Pacific migrant pickers arrive in Australia

By FoodWeek Online

The first of 2000 Pacific islands fruit pickers have finally arrived in Australia to start work.

The group of 50 people from Tonga arrived in Sydney today (Monday) before flying to Robinvale in Victoria, where they will pick almonds.

A total of more than 2000 unskilled workers from Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Kiribati are being given seven-month visas under the federal government's pilot migrant worker scheme.

Fruit growers have criticised the government for not flying in workers earlier. Originally, they were due to begin arriving in December last year.
