IT WAS an exciting day for three Rabi women who were selling their homemade products at the Melanesian Market Day at the University of the South Pacific (USP) yesterday.
The women, who are all first-timers to this event, came in yesterday morning with a matching attire, headbands and an impressive display of their homemade bags, handicrafts, jewellery and garlands.
"This is truly amazing for us. We usually sell our products just over at Pratt St, but we are so pleased to be here and the crowd are wonderful," said Nau Taka, one of the sellers.
Ms Taka said she and her companions wore matching clothes because they wished to represent a piece of their island culture at the Melanesian market.
"We want to display the beauty of our culture in what we make as well as the way we wear it. We wear our headbands because it is our custom," she said.
The group had their costumes made last year at the Hibiscus Festival and thought it appropriate to wear the colours again given the auspicious occasion.
"We know that today is a celebration of our Melanesian Islands and so we tried to look as beautiful as we could," Ms Taka said.
Ms Taka, who was flanked by her companions Toka Teka and Rosi John said all the products they sold were handmade.
"We are members of the Ministry of Women as well as the Fiji Arts Club, so we get a lot of time to put our creations together and we really do love it," Ms Taka said.
The women revealed that within the first couple of hours at the market day, they managed to make over $100 from their sales.
