Updated February 8, 2011 09:23:37

The former Executive Director of Papua New Guinea's Office of Climate Change has been charged with the murder of former rugby league international Aquila Emil.

Dr Theo Yasause has been interviewed by the police and charged with wilful murder.

Aquila Emil, who was 44, was shot and killed outside a popular nightclub in Port Moresby after what's been described as a road rage incident.

He represented the Kumuls in the 1990s and more recently Mr Emil was working to develop a national schools competition as part of PNG's bid to enter Australia's National Rugby League.

Pacific Beat's PNG correspondent Liam Fox is following the story.
