Hope fades for further survivors of Kiribati ferry disaster

ABC RADIO AUSTRALIA Updated Mon Jul 20, 2009 5:48pm AEST

Search and rescue authorities in Kiribati have all but abandoned any hope of finding further survivors of an inter-island wooden outrigger that capsized a week ago. Of the 45 passengers who left the capital, Tarawa, 13 have been rescued, five managed to swim ashore at Maiana Island - and the rest are believed to have perished.
