Kiribati being eyed by sport fishermen from Australia

Radio NZ International Posted at 07:37 on 07 December, 2009 UTC

A group of sports fishermen from Australia is due to arrive in Kiribati early next year to investigate potential new sport fishing grounds.

The tourism minister, Temate Ereata, says they will make a survey of Nonouti Lagoon, one of the breeding grounds for bone fish in the Kiribati chain.

Bone fish are sought after by many sports fisherman because of their speed and strength.

If the result of the survey suits them, the Australian group will start its sports fishing there, instead of at the traditional sport fishing ground at Christmas Island.
