Look back at Banaban history - Rabi Island Fiji

FIJI TIMES ONLINE Serafina Silaitoga Wednesday, December 08, 2010

MAINTAINING strong links with their history, the Banaban community will next week remember the arrival of their ancestors on the island of Rabi.

With an organised weeklong festival, the people of Rabi will hold traditional activities to remember their ancestors.

Islander Terikano Takesau said islanders from around the country and abroad have already arrived for the annual event. "It's a special day for us as we remember our ancestors who first arrived on Rabi island in the early 1900's.

"As part of the celebration, we will have traditional activities that will show our younger generation how our forefathers carried out Rabi handicraft work and other art work which identifies the Banaban people," Mrs Takesau said.

She said apart from passing down stories of Banaban ancestors to the younger generation, it was important to involve the young people in traditional activities.

"There will be mat weaving for the girls and other Banaban handicraft work including traditional activities for the boys.

"We will also have a festival with contestants from the four villages of Nuku, Tabwewa, Buakonikai and Tabiang," Mrs Takesau said.

The special event falls on December 15 and will include entertainment from the different villages and church groups.
