Meeting upskills rural women Fiji - Virgin Coconut Oil

Fiji Times Online Monika Singh Thursday, August 26, 2010

THE Department of Women held a two-day workshop on Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) for women in its efforts to economically empower women in the country.
Permanent Secretary for Social Welfare and Women, Govind Sami said making and selling virgin coconut oil was a great source of income for women in the villages and communities that have access to a lot of coconuts.
Mr Sami said the workshop provided the skills needed for the women to extract virgin coconut oil and it would help them to sustain the demand.
"It is one product with increasing demand both in local and international markets. It is a lucrative product to venture into for its price is very competitive on the international market," said Mr Sami.
Mr Sami said VCO industry could kick start the rural economies of the South Pacific states and become the means by which the coconut industry could reclaim an important national role.
He said the Department of Women would continue to drive more women into the industry as the source of income-generating initiatives for women and to lift the financial status of the society.
Mr Sami told the participants at the workshop that it was organised so that they could learn the skills to make VCO.
He said the idea was to get as many women to share the knowledge and encourage them to make use of the resources, initiate business in VCO production and get out of poverty.
"The government through the Export Promotion Programme is reiterating that people should make use of the agricultural resources to maximise export and cut back on imports," he said.
Mr Sami said the department would further strengthen VCO production along with other agricultural initiatives like vanilla farming, poultry and sandalwood farming through the Cottage Industry Development Program.
The workshop was held at the Fiji Girl Guides Hall in Suva.
