Pacific Island workers arrive in guest worker scheme

ABC RURAL
Monday, 16/02/2009

The first pacific island seasonal workers are arriving in Australia to pick fruit.

In August last year, the government announced it was starting a migrant workers scheme, and would source up to two thousand workers from Vanuatu, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea and Tonga.

The pilot scheme was scheduled to start late last year, but has faced delays as well as accusations the scheme could take jobs from Australian workers.

The Editor of the Times of Tonga, Kalafi Moala says that the scheme will make a big difference to Tongan families.

"It's a huge source of finance for a lot of these families," he says.

"They haven't had any jobs."
