Rower crosses Pacific Ocean arriving in Kiribati, inspires change

Years ago, Roz Savage, a successful management consultant, sat down and attempted to write two different versions of her future obituary.

One was of the conventional life she was heading toward, and the other was an obituary she would dream to claim as her own. An obituary of an adventurer who sailed the seas and explored the unknown.

“Little by little I began to realign my life, to put myself on track for the obituary I really wanted,” wrote Savage on her Web site. “I learned that living life according to my values made me happier than a big income and lots of possessions.”

Savage is now a world-renowned ocean rower, environmental campaigner, author and motivational speaker.

In 2005, she embarked upon her first adventure: rowing solo across the Atlantic.

“I believe that if you don’t keep pushing the boundaries and keep expanding your comfort zone, your comfort zone actually gets smaller and smaller,” Savage said. She then decided on her next challenge: the Pacific.

On Sept. 6, Savage arrived in the Republic of Kiribati, “completing stage 2 of her epic bid to become the first woman in history to row solo across the Pacific Ocean,” said Nicole Bilodeau, Savage’s program coordinator, in a news release.

Savage started stage two of her journey on May 24, in Honolulu and now totals 203 days at sea for her Pacific crossing.

She will row to Australia in 2010, completing the third and final stage of the Pacific crossing.
“Savage uses her trans-oceanic rowing voyages to inspire a movement toward sustainable living at both grassroots and global levels,” Bilodeau said.

Every stage of her journey has an environmental theme.

“There has been so much bad news about environmental issues that I think some people feel overwhelmed,” Savage said. “But there is something we can all do to make a difference, and it all adds up.”

Her environmental message this year is to take action on CO2 levels, by inspiring those around her to drive less and walk more.

She believes that through our actions, we can not only change our own lives, but also change the natural world around us for the better.

Savage continues to inspire many around the world through her motivational speeches and writings, including her book, “One Stroke at a Time.”

“I keep pushing, keep developing, keep evolving,” said Savage. “I keep showing what an ordinary person can do when they put their hearts and minds and souls into it.”
