The death toll in Fiji from Cyclone Tomas hs risen to three. The storm swept through the northern and eastern islands on Monday and Tuesday.

Emergency services in Fiji confirmed two more deaths on Friday. The body of a man who was reported missing near the northern town of Lasaba, after attempting to cross a river on Saturday, has been recovered by police.

A second man from the northern island of Rabi was also confirmed dead on Friday after a tree fell on his house.

Earlier a woman had drowned while trying to save family members off the coast of the second largest island Vanua Levu.

The National Disaster Management Committee is leaving the death toll open until the assessments in the eastern Lau group of islands are completed, which should be in the next 24 to 48 hours.

More than 300 houses have so far been reported damaged in the Lau islands. Many coastal areas were wrecked by waves from a storm surge generated by the cyclone as well as the destructive 175-km-per-hour winds.

The National Disaster Management Committee says there is still a shortage of tents and tarpaulins for homeless villagers, although more are expected to arrive from Australia and New Zealand over the next few days.
