Tonga's first solar electricity farm on track for July completion

ABC RADIO AUSTRALIA Updated 28 May 2012, 17:27 AEST

Tonga's first major renewable electricity generation plant, a solar farm on the main island of Tongatapu, will be ready for commissioning in late July.

The solar farm is located on two and a half hectares of land next to Tonga Power's diesel generation station, south of Nuku'alofa.

It is being funded by New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is being built by that country's biggest electricity generator, Meridian Energy.

Meridian's Corporate Venture Manager, Peter Apperley, told Jemima Garrett the project is progressing well.
