Women in rural Fiji concerned about rising cost of giving birth

Pacific Beat ABC RADIO Updated January 18, 2011 07:38:09

Women in Fiji's rural sector are anxious about the costs imposed on maternal health services as of the first of January this year.

The cost of giving birth in hospital could be as much as one hundred Fiji dollars a day which does not include the price of regular check-ups or other ancilliary services.

Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls, executive director for FEMLINK says the burden of the new charges is beyond many rural families.

The charges for certain medical services have been in placed in the Ministry of Health,Fiji. for a pregnant mother to be booked it costs $10.00 and pays $10.00 in every antenatal clinics. To deliver, it costs $50.00 for married mothers and $25.00 for single mothers.

it is an eye-opener for married couples to plan the family wisely. therefore, Family planning is the solution to space out their children in-order to prepare them to save money for the next planned child's expenses.
