Rare Colour Footage - Battle of Tarawa during WWII

When the Japanese invaded Banaba in 1942 the Banabans were forcibly removed to Nauru, Kosrae and Tarawa.

The ‘Battle of Tarawa’ was known as one of the major battles during the War in the Pacific. This is rare colour footage of the actual Americans landing on Tarawa and the battle to liberate Tarawa from the Japanese. The Banabans who were in Tarawa during this battle would have vivid memories of this terrifying period in Banaba and Kiribati history.

Here in Australia we commemorate our war dead with the saying, ‘Lest We Forget!’ It is also important that the young Banaban generation do not forget what their ancestors went through during these very difficult days of the Japanese invasion and the forced removal of the Banabans from their homeland by the Japanese.
