Fleeing to a safe place on the island is impossible: on one side is a lagoon, on the other the ocean.<br /> Pelenise Alofa has three very clear messages for industrialised countries. Firstly, they must drastically<br /> reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A 40% reduction by 2020 is needed to give the small islands in the<br /> Pacific a chance of survival. Secondly, money must be made available to allow people in the south to adapt to a changing climate. This money must be made available immediately, and should not return to the North through costs for consultancy and research.
