Korieta from Uma, Rabi Island relishes his big moment

FIJI TIMES ONLINE Emoni Narawa Saturday, July 28, 2012

HE idolises New Zealand All Blacks livewire hooker Kevin Mealamu who has a similar look like him. And one day he wants to feature on international rugby stage like Mealamu but only donning the white Flying Fijians jumper instead of the black jersey.

Waisea Korieta, the lone Rabi player in the Assemblies of God High School under-18 team, is honoured to be given an opportunity to represent his school at national level. Korieta will run onto Prince Charles Park today against Natabua High School. He only relishes that he had picked up the oval ball three years ago when he joined the school.

Wearing the number two jersey, the Uma villager vows to give his best to the school that taught him rugby when he first entered the school corridors.

"It is a great honour to be playing for AOG especially at this level. This is history for the school and for me personally I am overwhelmed about it," a soft-spoken Korieta said.

The 18-year-old was part of the AOG team since he was 15, in 2009. They won the Tier Two U17 grade last year and hope to turn the table against the best today.

While his teammates call him 'Wise' and sometime 'Rabi', Korieta says he feels comfortable around his peers.

"I know I am the only Rabi boy in the team and I am proud of that. I will be representing the school and my family and every Rabi native so I am looking forward to the clash against Natabua.

"It will be the first time we are playing at this level but we are prepared for it and we know we just have to go there and give our best, most importantly to rely on God who is the source of our strength," the Form Six student said.

The AOG and Natabua game kicks off at 4pm at Nadi's Prince Charles Park.
