your sister in the Lord,
Mrs. Julie Mewis.
Hello Guy
I did respond to your comment in early January but I must have done something wrong as it doesn't seem to have uploaded. I'll have another go and hope this works.
My grandfather, Claude Smith, who was 27 at the time, worked on the island between 1901 and 1902, so the man on the of the photo would not have been your grandfather. My grandfather did talk about a missionary named George in an old diary snippet that my sister has. It may have been George but it's hard to say. I am slowly trying to trace more of the story. My grandfather has two sons still living but their memories are scratchy. I recently gave them a copy of 'Te Rii ni Banaba" which they loved. It may prompt a few memories of the stories my grandfather told. I do know my grandfather loved the Banaban and Kiribati people and he gave talks at schools and on public occasions. He came from Footscay and he would go down to the wharfs to talk to the crews when the phosphate ships berthed.
Sorry I can't be of help Guy, but I guess this at least eliminates one possibility.
Kind regards, Jan

Have you got any more collections of any sort from Banaba to display? It will be interesting to see what you got (if there's any) because you'll never know what interest other people have to gather all sorts of collections as part of their hobbies. Cheers and g'day mate.
