Letter Sent to My Grandparents in 1931 I think in Banaban

This letter is beautifully hand written. The script. But because it is very old (88 years) and was folded in 5 parts and punched with a small punch, opening it means there are about 12 fortunately small holes, but in addition there are small tears, and as it was in pencil it is now very hard to make out the words although some seem fairly clear. I used lights and a magnifying glass.  I have copied it and written it out to type here. Some words are extremely hard to make out. For example what…See More

Richard Taylor commented on Richard Taylor's blog post Re Banaban Letter and some History of my mother's & family on 'Ocean Island'
"I made a mistake re my mother's memoir as she states she left Banaba in 1926 (age 9) so the 9 and 1/2 looks about right.  So she spent 9 years in Banaba as a child. Then later about 5 or 6 years as a teenager / young woman from I think…"

Richard Taylor commented on Richard Taylor's blog post Re Banaban Letter and some History of my mother's & family on 'Ocean Island'
"Here is my mother's memoir, it is good, but stops to early in time but it includes her time on Banaba which was split into two periods, that about 1918 - 1923 or 24 (I will check if my sisters can remember more of that) and then, after the…"

"I replied by email etc. 'mauri' I see used. In NZ Maori it means something such as 'life force' so I suspect it means 'good' or something like that in Banaban. That is one word I see in some of these songs and the…"

Re Banaban Letter and some History of my mother's & family on 'Ocean Island'

I am doing a large project which I call 'The Infinite Project'. It involves all media and all aspects of things at least in theory. However one aspect has brought me via one thread of it, the personal, to some letters.   Initially I was going to use my father's letters and a few others etc and some of my mothers. However I have now found and am 'revolving around' her and my grandfather's time in Banaba before WWII.   Various letters, mostly from English or Australian people are of interest.…See More

With regards to your grandfather was he related to John Miller who was on Banaban between 1908-39.  His son Frank now passed away donated copies of all John's photos and Ken and I went to visit Frank when we first started to research our history book back in about 1997. He lived on Bribie Island north of Brisbane. If you can email me direct on stacey@banaban.com The Tekeang name is a popular name amongst the Banabans. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards Stacey
