Ken and I would like to wish our family in Aitutaki all the best wishes and prayers. Ken had a lovely phone call conversation from te umane (Bure), wife and daughter just before Christmas. Bure was saying how much he was missing all his family back in Rabi and asked Ken to convey his greetings to all his family in Rabi and Banaba. We hope that they are all OK and are not suffering to much from the devastation caused by Cyclone Pat. If anyone has an update with news on the family please let…

During my visit to Rabi with Niki Taxidis last October 09, we met up with a remarkable young Banaban woman - Radhika Teaoka, who is now working for the Rabi Council of Leaders in the Social Welfare Department. Radhika has launched a project to assist improverished Banaban children on Rabi to be able to attend school.
Education on Rabi is not free and parents stuggle to find the money to send their children to school. This project provides…

IN an area behind Rabi island, sits four houses - typically Banaban styled homes - occupied by families who depend on the limited land in the area for food.
Albert Cove which sits in the northern end of Rabi island is mostly surrounded by its beautiful white sandy beaches and mountainous area behind the homes.
The four families that live on the island plant a variety of root…

IT can almost blind you. If you're not careful about screening the beauty of Albert Cove and Ringgold Atolls with your naked eyes, then you'd certainly go blind.
It sits behind Taveuni and Rabi islands in the northern division.
The blending colours of the blue skies, crystal clear shallow waters, white sandy beach with a backdrop of green is breathtaking.
That's just how stunning and…

The story about the lost propeller on the Great Barrier Island Trislander reminds Hugh Ragg of a similar event in Fiji. "Some years ago, a pilot friend of mine was flying a Trislander from Savusavu to Suva when the propeller on the tail engine sheared off. There were two passengers on board, an
elderly Rabi Islander and a Fijian woman. As he was over…

ROTUMA will receive about $20m for major capital works on the island for the next five years. The interim Government made the decision based on its remoteness and strategic location between Fiji and other countries in the northern Pacific. Commissioner Eastern Tomasi Tui said Rotuma could play a vital role in the exchange of commodities to Pacific islands such as Tuvalu and was…

“If these people can spend millions and millions on sending troops to fight other countries, why can’t they spend maybe a couple of billions just to save people, like ourselves; the marginalised, poorest of the poor. Why? Because we are taking the brunt, we are the victims of these green[house] gas emissions, the pollution made by industrialised countries.”
These words were spoken by a Carteret Islander in an unfinished documentary,…
