FARMERS on Rabi island face major challenges of marketing their products to Viti Levu.
As a result, the Banaban Child Welfare has set up plans to work with the island council to help farmers market their products outside Rabi.
Welfare officer Radhika Teaoka said earning good income was a problem for many families and the lack of marketing opportunities did not help.
"We have had consultations with villagers and village leaders about the marketing problems we face in Rabi and that is one of the causes of non-payment of school fees which has increased our dropouts.
"The meetings and discussion we've had will be presented to our island council and we will assist our council leaders in fighting the school dropout situation," Ms Teaoka said.
She said early this year Banaban Child Welfare paid the fees of three children, who had not attended school at all, to go to school.
"They are children of single mothers and the funding we had with us at that time, paid for their fees, their school stationery and uniforms," she said.
"One of the children was eight years old but he had to start from Class 1 and he wasn't worried about his age at all because he just wanted to receive an education."
She said the villagers were aware of the importance of education and how every child had the right to education.
