Banaban canoe tradition lives on

Rabi islanders are proud of their traditional canoes which they still use today as a mean of their livelihood.

They continue to use canoes for fishing in a bid to keep their culture alive.

More than 50 Rabi islanders who are Banaban descendants spent the Diwali long weekend in Savusavu.

They were part of the three-day Consort Outrigger Regatta.

It was a weekend full of fun, paddling and sailing competitions at the infamous Savusavu Harbour.

Banaban women meet on special day

FIJI SUN 11/3/2010

A day set aside for Banaban women to promote their handicraft work, exchange and share their skills was a success.

More than 200 people gathered on Rabi Island on Friday, October 29, to witness a huge amount of art work during the Banaban Women’s Day celebration.

Banaban Women’s Organisation president Terikano Takesau said it was a success because the women managed to sell their handicraft to civil servants and islanders.

Pacific called to ratify convention to protect seafarers
