THREE new councilors have been elected members of the Rabi Island Council following the by-election last week.

The new members are from Uma and Tabwewa Village.

BANABANS living on Rabi Island in Cakaudrove have appealed to Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Britain to help them raise $2m to rehabilitate their homeland, Ocean Island or Banaba, from the ravages of 100 years of phosphate mining.

FURTHER UPDATE: RABI 25 MARCH 2010 - All Aid now distributed through out remote Rabi settlements

Ken and Biniati have just phoned from Rabi to let us know that they have now finished the aid drop right to the outer settlements e.g. Eritabeta, Motawa, and the other side of the island. Ken said the people living at these remote settlements were able to use the satellite phone to talk to family back in main land. Biniati advised that the Fiji team were still on Rabi working on the follow up assessments at each village. Ken will sadly be leaving Rabi tomorrow and heading towards the coconut…

Tropical Cyclone expected for Fiji heading towards Rabi, Taveuni

Friday, March 12, 2010
A depression near Samoa is now expected to develop into a Cyclone before it will approach the Fiji group in the next forty eight hours or so. The director of meteorology Rajendra Prasad says the system has become stationary to the northwest of Samoa but may start to move southwest towards Fiji soon.

Banaban Family - Burenaimaneaba Kureta and Family in Aitutaki Cooks

Ken and I would like to wish our family in Aitutaki all the best wishes and prayers. Ken had a lovely phone call conversation from te umane (Bure), wife and daughter just before Christmas. Bure was saying how much he was missing all his family back in Rabi and asked Ken to convey his greetings to all his family in Rabi and Banaba. Please Help with the Banaban Child Welfare Project for 2010

During my visit to Rabi with Niki Taxidis last October 09, we met up with a remarkable young Banaban woman - Radhika Teaoka, who is now working for the Rabi Council of Leaders in the Social Welfare Department. Radhika has launched a project to assist improverished Banaban children on Rabi to be able to attend school.

No casualty reports in north as winds ease
