It follows a dramatic drop in fish stocks in the area around Taveuni on the eastern side of the island, which local people say has been caused by overfishing.
This follows a similar traditional tabu on taking fish from the area around Wainunu Bay on the south-western tip of Vanua Levu.
The traditional chief of the area around Taveuni is the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, and he tells Bruce Hill these sort of local fishing bans need to be combined with long term conservation measures to preserve fish stocks.
