Fijian villagers save beached whales

A small village in Fiji has managed to save 8 beached whales who found themselves stranded just as the villagers were going to attend a Sunday service. There were 12 in all - but three of the smaller whales had already died. However, the inhabitants of Nasavu - in the north-west of Fiji's mainland - managed to get together and push the others back out to sea. Fiji President to visit Rabi this week. RCL organising food aid purchase as Rabi faces critical food shortage

Dr Paulo (Bauro) Vanualailai reported today from Suva, that Fiji President - Ratu Epeli Nailatikau will be visiting Rabi either Wednesday or Thursday in the aftermath of Cyclone Tomas. The Chairman advised that they had also received 34 sets of clothing from the Catholic Archdiocese in Suva as part of an Australia Catholic aid package to assist Fiji. On Monday 22nd March Ken Sigrah arrived on Rabi with food rations for the elders, invalids and mothers with babies. Fiji: Seed distribution for Cakaudrove (RABI)

Distribution of seeds has begun today for Rabi and the District of Wainigadru by agriculture officials that are carrying out damage assessment surveys in Cakaudrove Province.

Vegetable seeds such as Chinese cabbage, French bean, long bean, tomatoes and eggplant have been distributed to farmers in the affected areas to kick-start their food security program.

Rabi is now online - Biara Touakin reporting direct from Rabi

We just had our network back again online and here's some updates:

On Tuesday afternoon a group of Government personnels arrived on Rabi with a first load of ration which includes; Rice, Flour, sugar, dahl and soya bean oil.

I do not know how much each individual received but here at Tabwewa;

800g sugar, 800g flour, 1kg rice, 800g dahl & 500ml soya-bean oil.

Banabans Can’t Wait - Organizing their Own Emergency Food Rations for Rabi

Tuesday 23 March 2010 Savusavu-Rabi, Fiji by Stacey King

Banaban, Ken Sigrah rang this morning from the lorry as they drove off from Savusavu heading for Karoko. He reported out of his FJD$3,000 Donations budget he was able to get the following food rations for general village distribution planned for tomorrow on Rabi. He said that all the food prices in Savusavu had gone up rapidly due to the current crisis.

WE NEED TO FIND BOAT TO HELP US! Ken has advised no one is helping them with boats - they will have to find money for this!

Ken has advised that no one is willing to help with boats across to Rabi so we will have to find money to hire boats. Hoping if anyone up there can help us out taking emergency food across to Rabi. Please contact us ASAP.

First Contact with Rabi Fiji via Ken Sigrah on Satellite phone- They need help with FOOD

Ken has just made contact with me now and was standing outside our home in Stream Valley Rabi with his brother Biniati and family. All our family is OK and our houses, one of which was only completed the day before the cylone hit has made it. All Biniati efforts with sandbagging the houses and wiring down the roofs with branches and logs has paid off. Ken reports that Rabi is in a very bad way confirming what our Chairman has already told us. He is attending a village meeting this afternoon…

Rabi Council meeting now in Suva to form Rabi Disaster Management team

RCL Chairman, Paulo Vanualailai has advised us that they are now meeting in Suva this morning to set up a RABI DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAM. They are setting up in the Banaban Trust Board office in Banaba House Pratt Street, Suva. We will be listing the phone and fax numbers shortly.

The name of the Banaban man killed on Rabi in Cyclone Tomas was Tuutake Tebeke

This information just came in from RCL Chairman to confirm what we had all been waiting to know.
The name for the deceased person is Tuutake Tebeke he is in early 50's.
He died at Rakentai on the other side of Rabi

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all those suffering in the aftermath of Cyclone Tomas.
